| FunNet dates back to somewhere around 1997-98. Several of us got bored
enough to have a go at running our own IRC network. Back then, almost
no-one had broadband connections, let alone colocated servers to run our
IRC servers on. So, we started out with our 'servers' on dynamic IP's
and not much more than dial-up connections.
After a while, we got our first colocated server, in the UK, on a shell-box
with lots of other IRC servers. Needless to say, this box wasn't very
stable, and got hacked more than once. However, we didn't care as it
was still our only server with a static IP.
A while later we got another server, and that one is still with us today.
The box and bandwidth are sponsored by my ISP,
caiway (Formerly Kabelfoon).
Not long thereafter, for reasons I cannot remember, we lost our server
in the UK, and naaldwijk.nl.eu.funnet.org was the only server left.
Back then, we still only had about 5 people on FunNet, so it really
wasn't a big deal, but we managed to get some other people interested.
Soon thereafter, FUF, Ghent and Ralf linked their servers and FunNet finally
became a real network. We started getting some users, even tho we didn't
do any advertising. We've been growing slowly ever since, and still are.
We've seen some other servers come and go over the last years, even
Ghent decided to leave at some point, after being with the network for
several years. Ralf's server went down a couple of times, for several
reasons, but he always managed to get it back up and running eventually.
Over the years, we've had several different services linked, at times
none at all. We've messed around with nickname registration but decided
it wasn't for us. We finally settled with SrvX, our current services.
While not perfect, they are adequate, and as far as I know, most people
are OK with them.
The rest of funnet's history will be written in the future, maybe even by you! :)
